As a business owner, it’s important for you to bring out the best in your team. Your employees will not attain higher levels of success because you want them to be more successful, or because you want to have a record year. They will increase their sales and income for goals that are important to them and the people they love.

There are rules you can follow, to help them attain a higher level of success which include:

1. Provide Your Team with Written Expectations

Make sure the people you supervise understand your expectations. Let them know what they can expect from you and what you expect from them. This avoids confusion and also prevents unrealistic expectations.

2. Utilize their Greatest Talents

Utilize the greatest strengths of your employees. Meet with them on a regular basis to discuss the 80/20 rule and to get them more focused on best use of their time (the 20% that provides them with 80% of their results). Each week have them hold themselves accountable by asking three questions:

  • What did I do right this week? The 20% that gave them 80% of their results.
    • Commit to doing more of those actions the following week.
  • How did I waste time this week? Stop those actions immediately.
  • What new idea am I implementing? Imagine the impact if your team. implemented one new idea every month to improve their result.

3. Set Consistent Standards

Establish a standard of excellence throughout your company culture and have an Employee Handbook that outlines policies and procedures for your business. This also prevents the appearance of favoritism.

4. Encourage Your Team to Make Decisions Realizing That Failure Is Not Fatal

It is important to create an environment where failure is not fatal. Failures should be viewed as opportunities to grow and learn. Review the decisions made, actions taken and consequences to make it a learning experience. You actually GAIN power when you empower your team to be decisive.

5. Teach Them to Emulate Success

The quickest way to achieve a higher level of success is to change the five people you hang around with most. You want to teach your employees to seek out successful people and emulate their success. They might consider joining mastermind groups with other successful individuals who are also looking to achieve a greater level of success.

6. Recognition

Recognize and applaud achievements both big and small. Have small rewards in your desk that recognize extra effort or small “wins.” Create contests where everyone has a chance to win, not always the same top producer which then demotivates the rest of your team.

7. Combine Positive and Negative Feedback

When you need to provide constructive criticism, always precede it with positive reinforcement and then discuss areas needing improvement.

8. Appeal to The Competitive Spirit

Whenever possible, create a competitive environment in your office. If your staff is large enough, form teams and have them compete against each other. Make the contests fun and focus contests on the areas where your business needs the most attention.

RULE #9 – Collaborate

You want to place a premium on collaboration. Individuals on the recruiting side of the process should provide a minimum of three orders, assignments or contract leads to the individuals responsible for client development.
People on the client development side should know your best business and spend 85% of their time targeting that exact business.

RULE #10 – Storms

Have a process to handle disagreements and conflicts. When you employ a team of type “A” personalities storms will happen and you need to have a process to handle those storms.

RULE #11 – Maintain Your Own Motivation

No matter what is happening, you must be the most motivated and positive person in your office. If your team senses that you are worried or down, they will take their lead from you.

RULE #12 – Study Your Employees Needs

This is the most important rule for you to master. Have every one of your employees write down the following:

Ten Non-Negotiable Goals with Action Items

It is important that you have your employees write down their Business, Personal, Health, Career, Financial, Spiritual and Philanthropic goals. You need to know what is most important to your employees. They need to list and post their top 10 non-negotiable goals followed by five DATED action items. The action items are the steps to achieve the goal. Check off as action items are completed and make sure goals are posted where your employees can see them as they work.

You can’t motivate someone else

  • You can’t motivate someone for your reasons
  • You can’t motivate someone who doesn’t want to be motivated
  • People motivate themselves for their own reasons and these 10 written goals with action items will remind them of those reasons!
